For the beginning screenwriter.
You will learn how to format a screenplay page in Final Draft (the industry standard software) and how to construct a scene accurately. This includes learning to write actively for the screen, how to introduce characters, format dialogue, use sluglines, introduce sound effects, use parentheticals correctly and kinetically move a scene between locations.
You will then use these skills to
create a 2 person dialogue scene and one multi location scene which you will
format correctly under supervision.
The package ends with a guided
analysis of your ideas for a feature screenplay or TV pilot.
This is an ideal precursor to the 'Conception and Delivery' package.
Three classes.
Our signature package.
For those who have taken 'Baby Steps' or who are already familiar with the content of that program.
These seven classes lead you through the process of breaking a viable movie or TV concept, learning how to structure it using our Tension Sequence method and writing a tight first draft.
Class one introduces you to the
current film and tv market and establishes your personal goals for your script. Do you hope to sell it as a spec and to whom? Do you aim to secure independent financing to produce it yourself? Are you aiming to secure representation and go up for assignments? With this in mind, we lock the idea you'll work on.
During class two we teach you The Tension Method as a means to structure the script. A movie or TV show is assigned for
homework in the relevant genre, using the tools you have learnt.
In class three you will analyze this genre piece in terms of its structure and apply the concepts to a discussion of your own movie. You will be taught how to write a script outline or 'Tension Blueprint' for your idea. After this you work on your outline at home.
In class four we will analyze and lock your blueprint and commence work on Act One of your screenplay.
Class five yields notes on your first act and we restructure your blueprint in accordance with the script's progress.
In class six you will undertake the same process on the second act.
In class seven you will undertake the same process on the third act and be given suggestions for overall structural changes.
Micro script line notes will be given and we will
discuss your next steps on the
project and any rewrite goals.
This package is for those who have an existing script which has died. Either it failed to reach the right audience, failed to elicit the correct response, or just plain fizzled.
If there is still something in the core concept which you love, then come and resurrect it with us.
The program begins with Full Body Diagnosis. We analyze the
current script with you and determine the cause of death.
During class two we identify the core hook of the project and determine the correct format for it. Should this TV pilot actually be a contained feature? We then start to break down The Tension Method, which will structure the new draft.
In class three we analyze a pre-assigned movie or TV show in the appropriate genre using The Tension Method and apply the concepts to your movie. You will be taught how to write a new
outline or 'Tension Blueprint' for your idea.
In class five you will receive notes on your first act and restructure your blueprint in accordance with the script's progress.
In class six we will undertake the same process on the second act.
In class seven you will undertake the same process on the third act and be given suggestions for overall script structure changes.
IFinally, micro script line notes will be given and we will assess the rewrite and discuss your next steps with the project.
At this stage, some students use their final 'Tension Blueprint' as a basis for taking 'Oral Exam'.
Have you been asked to meet on or pitch a project? These classes help you to take the idea you're trying to sell and learn how to structure it as a verbal presentation.
First, we will examine the context of your meeting. Is it a general, a producer pitch, a studio pitch, a network pitch?
Then we establish a target length
for your presentation and work
to format your idea into our
signature 'verbal pitch cue sheet'
Finally you will practice delivering your pitch and fielding tough questions.
Three 60 minute classes.
Unique Script E.R analysis of your script which focuses on concept, character and structure.
We discuss your script's existing strengths, weaknesses, and offer suggestions for improvement in the
context of today's market. Includes a pdf summary document and one hour follow up call or meeting.
An ideal precursor to one of our rewrite programs.
